Osmania was also the only university in the erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad and the first university in the country to offer instruction
in an Indian language i.e., in Urdu. Today it's jurisdiction extends to the twin cities of Hyderabad, Secunderabad and five districts of Telangana. Over the years, the University has crossed several milestones in the pursuit of
academic excellence and has emerged as a pacesetter in the field of higher education. Today it is a multi-faculty, multi-campus, semi-residential and affiliating university reflecting the national agenda for higher learning. The University today is a modern academic institution of great history preparing for the challenges at the onset of 21st Century and offers a wide variety of courses that suit every body's interest. With a range of faculties spreading over Arts, Social Sciences, Science, Commerce, Management, Law, Engineering, Technology. Education and Oriental Learning, the latest addition being Informatics, and 52 departments, the University has become a national leader in teaching, learning and research programmes. The University's reputation for academic excellence attracts students from around Hyderabad, India and world. Many of our students have been well placed in industrial and research. The main campus is spread over an area of about 1200 acres with seven colleges. It's four constituent colleges are located in twin cities. It has eight district P.G.Centers & nearly 400 government & private colleges affiliated to it. The total enrollment is nearly two lakh students.
The university has more than 1100 teaching faculty and about 3000 non-teaching staff on its rolls. There are 9 faculties in the University & sixty departments offering diversified subjects at the undergraduate & postgraduate levels, besides research , doctoral and organizations of national and international standing. Osmania faculty is noted for its educational background, research and personal attention it imparts to students. Many among the faculty have studied, taught, conducted research or served as consultants in various other countries. Osmania University offers affordable and career-oriented higher education. All University Colleges have dedicated PG Centers run by qualified and specialist staff.
The University has taken a decision to increase the intake capacity by 33 percent and make them available to stud ents on payment basis according to latest information. This decision to create extra seats in post graduate courses has been taken to provide an opportunity to students who pass the entrance examinations but not among the rankers qualifying for a seat. The proposal has been mooted with the idea of boosting the internal financial resources of the university as well as creating access for higher studies to more number of students. However the increase does not apply to Engineering, Technology, Law, Education, Management, computer applications and other professional courses, according to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. DC Reddy. In addition to these plans, the University has also taken a decision to start four self financing post-graduate programmes from this academic year i.e. M.Sc (Bio-technology), M.Sc ( Forensic Science), ME ( Automation and Robotics)and ME ( Construction Engineering and Management). The University also plans to start courses in Actuarial Science and Defence and Strategic Studies shortly.
